“According to a United Nations Environment Program report titled “Waste Crimes,” up to 50 million tons of electronic waste—mainly computers and smartphones—are expected to be dumped in 2017” (theatlantic.com). This waste ends up in landfills or in developing countries for people to take apart for scrap metal. I approached this issue by repurposing broken, non-profitable iPhone screens taken from a local phone repair shop into the top of the side table.

My intention for this design was to have the up-cycled aspect be an afterthought rather than the defining feature. It is my belief that sustainability should be eloquently intertwined in consumer products such as furniture. The screens lay on a sheet of clear acrylic.

I wanted the table to have a designated area for books so that they do not take up extra room on the table top. I first thought about incorporating a separate ledge under the table top, but then created a rack-like addition to the table top. This allows the user to hang their book at the page they’re on, also acting like a bookmark.
